What a small business website really costs per month
Ask five people what a small business website costs and you will get five answers, because they are pricing different things. The clearer question is: which monthly costs are unavoidable, which are optional, and what are you getting for each?
The costs every site has
- Domain name. Your address on the web. Usually billed yearly, so divide by twelve for a monthly figure.
- Hosting. Where the site lives. Prices vary widely depending on the provider and what is included.
- Security certificate. The padlock in the browser. Often included with hosting now; check before paying extra.
These keep the lights on. They do not make the site any better.
The costs that depend on how you run it
- Your own time. If you update the site yourself, the cost is hours: logging in, remembering how the editor works, fixing what moved. Put a value on that time when you compare options.
- A website builder subscription. If your site runs on a builder, the plan fee usually bundles hosting and the editor.
- Maintenance or care plans. Someone else handles updates, backups or content changes. What is included varies a lot between providers.
- Developer time. Billed per job or per hour for changes you cannot make yourself.
- Extras. Booking tools, email marketing, paid plugins, stock photos.
How to compare quotes
Put every option in the same table:
- What is the monthly price, and is there a setup or activation fee?
- What is included each month? Routine content updates? Design improvements? Technical upkeep?
- How do you request a change, and how quickly does it happen?
- What is not included? This line matters more than the headline price.
- Can you leave easily, keeping your domain and content?
A cheap plan that never gets your site updated is not cheap if customers see last year's prices.
What you should expect for your money
At a minimum, a small business site should:
- Say clearly, on the first screen, what you do and where.
- Make it easy to contact you or ask for a quote.
- Show current hours, services and prices.
- Look trustworthy on a phone.
If your current monthly spend does not get you those four things, the problem is not the amount, it is what the money is buying.
Where Yulpo fits
Yulpo is an AI agent that keeps your website current. It works with WordPress sites first; Yulpo's connector publishes the changes, so you never edit WordPress yourself.
Yulpo is a monthly service for owners who already have a website:
- It sharpens your existing website: a better hero, a better lead capture section and better design. Not a redesign.
- It keeps the site current through a chat window, so you do not spend your own hours in an editor.
- Price: $99/month.
When you compare, apply the same five questions above to Yulpo as to any other option, including what sits outside the monthly price. For a plain list of what Yulpo does and does not do, see the Yulpo capability spec.
